Walking on Money - The Power of Being Your Own Boss

Being your own boss is sold as freedom and experienced as ownership. The freedom is real, but it arrives attached to every decision nobody else is going to make. This episode looks at what actually changes on the day the last instruction from someone else stops arriving.

The useful shift, the episode argues, is from doing the work to deciding the work. An owner who is only ever executing has bought themselves a job with worse hours. An owner who sets the week deliberately has bought something else.

What the episode works through

  • The difference between being busy and being booked.
  • Choosing which work to stop taking, and saying so plainly.
  • Setting a working week on purpose rather than letting demand set it.
  • Deciding what only the owner can do, and what merely feels that way.
  • Building the business so a week away does not close it.

The part that is easy to put off

Listing the tasks done last week and marking each one as owner work or hired work. The list is usually uncomfortable, and it is the shortest route to knowing what the next hire or the next dropped service should be.
